Viva La Vigie
Where Michelin Mastery Meets Mediterranean Spirit.
THERE IS A PRECISE MOMENT during a lunch on the Riviera when the theater of the Mediterranean ceases to be a backdrop and becomes the main event.
At La Vigie Zanoni, suspended over the rocky shoreline at the far tip of the Monte-Carlo Beach peninsula, that moment arrives somewhere along the shaded pine path that leads to the terrace—a walk that feels more like a gradual escape from the hustle and bustle of the Principality than an approach to a restaurant. By the time the trees part and the water appears, the dining room reveals itself: less a room, but rather a private yacht anchored permanently over the swells.
For decades, this location has been Monaco's ultimate summer playground. Under the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM), the venue has seen various concepts over the years. This season, the historic space has found its true rhythm as La Vigie Zanoni, handed over to Chef Simone Zanoni—the Lombard-born talent behind the Michelin-starred Le George at the Four Seasons George V in Paris.
Zanoni has stripped away the stiff, multi-course formalities of classic Monegasque dining in favor of a casual, Italian sharing-style menu that perfectly matches the sea breeze. It is a transition that feels entirely right for the times: relaxed, exceptionally polished, and genuinely delicious.
The table is set with absolute, breezy restraint, decorated with bright lemons and small jars of mustard and acacia honey—a nod to the chef's Italian roots—while the menu discourages individual ownership. The impeccable staff expertly guides you to order for the table, turning lunch into a communal affair, more reminiscent of a long Sunday at an Italian nonna's than a Riviera power lunch.
The triumph of summer freshness is the raw bar. The tuna crudo paired with fresh strawberries is a vibrant exercise in balancing acid, sweetness, and the clean fat of the fish, perfectly suited to the midday heat.
But it is in the hot kitchen where Zanoni's Italian soul truly shines.
The tortellini carbonara—plump, delicate parcels carrying the rich, salty depth of Roman tradition—and the veal shoulder ravioli are spectacular, as is a risotto alle vongole that arrives loose and glossy, the clams barely cooked through, with a taste echoing the sea just beyond the railing.
For those craving something more architectural, there's Zanoni's own cotoletta alla milanese—the Lombard classic he is, by reputation, incapable of leaving off any menu he touches. The veal arrives bone-in, golden, and shatteringly crisp, a reminder that this chef's technique is every bit as serious as his setting is frivolous.
Yet the dish that defines the setting is the tagliolini with caviar and champagne. It is a clever, slightly cheeky nod to the restaurant's high-rolling neighbors. The pasta is perfectly al dente, coated in a velvety, effervescent emulsion that cradles the salinity of the caviar. It is luxurious, but executed with flawless technical restraint.
At midday, a resident DJ spins a low, warm soundtrack that blends seamlessly with the natural melody of the waves, keeping the atmosphere lively and distinctly Monaco.
As the lunch hour stretches toward the late afternoon, dessert arrives. The tiramisu is light and smooth, and a pistachio semifreddo, cut with a bright citrus sorbet, offers a cooler, more restrained counterpoint. But the real crowd-pleaser is a spectacularly generous bowl of vanilla gelato served family-style, flanked by small bowls of warm chocolate sauce, roasted hazelnuts, and fresh berries. It is simple, unpretentious, and utterly delightful.
Under Zanoni's direction, the food is no longer just a companion to the view—it is a reason to make the journey.
