Gratefully & Affectionately: Mary Lavin & The New Yorker

Gratefully & Affectionately: Mary Lavin & The New Yorker

By GRÁINNE HURLEY

A debut that brings fascinating insight into the lives and careers of two mid-20th-century working women, operating on either side of the Atlantic.

THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK to explore Mary Lavin’s relationship with The New Yorker. The Irish American writer was introduced to the magazine by J. D. Salinger in 1957, marking a new chapter in Lavin’s career. Lavin went on to have a lucrative first-reading agreement for 29 years, and the author and her chief New Yorker editor, Rachel MacKenzie, exchanged almost 400 letters. Within a year of working together, they were ending their letters with “love”, “gratefully” and “affectionately”.
Hurley’s book draws extensively from this correspondence and reveals their collaborative relationship, Lavin’s writing process, the inner workings and editing procedures of The New Yorker. The book also reveals Lavin’s friendships with prominent literary figures including Elizabeth Bowen, Eudora Welty, Frank O’Connor, William Maxwell, and John McGahern.
Gráinne Hurley worked on this book when she was the Ireland Funds Monaco writer in residence at the Princess Grace Irish Library (spring 2023). Published by New Island Books in June 2025 and available at the Princess Grace Irish Library. (pgil.mc)

Be Mine: A Frank Bascombe Novel

Be Mine: A Frank Bascombe Novel

By RICHARD FORD

A profound, funny, poignant love letter to our beleaguered world.

Winner of the 2025 Prix Fitzgerald, Richard Ford delivers the final novel in the world of Frank Bascombe, one of the most indelible characters in American literature.
Over the course of four celebrated works of fiction and almost forty years, the Pulitzer Prize winner has crafted an ambitious, incisive, and singular view of American life as lived. Unconstrained, astute, provocative, often laugh-out-loud funny, Frank Bascombe is once more our guide to the great American midway.
Now in the twilight of life, a man who has occupied many colorful lives - sportswriter, father, husband, ex-husband, friend, real estate agent - Bascombe finds himself in the most sorrowing role of all: caregiver to his son, Paul, diagnosed with ALS. On a shared winter odyssey to Mount Rushmore, Frank, in typical Bascombe fashion, faces down the mortality that is assured to each of us, and in doing so confronts what happiness might signify at the end of days.

Un Été En Mer: Voyage en Pélagos, sanctuaire de la Méditerranée

Un Été En Mer: Voyage En Pélagos, Sanctuaire De La Méditerranée

By OLIVIER WEBER & SIMONETTA GREGGIO

More than a story, this book is a declaration of love for our shared Mediterranean.

IN 2025, THE PELAGOS AGREEMENT celebrates 25 years since Monaco, France, and Italy established the very first international marine protected area in the Mediterranean—and the first in the world to include a large portion of the high seas. From Italy, the marine sanctuary stretches from northern Sardinia to Elba Island in the east, then across Monaco to Hyères, France, in the west, encompassing the entire coast of Corsica.

As part of a year-long writer’s residency by the Pelagos Initiative, Olivier Weber and Simonetta Greggio were commissioned to travel across the Sanctuary to meet with scientists, fishermen, marine park managers, snorkellers and volunteers from conservation associations. They found themselves immersed in the deep blue sea that we dream of but know so little about. And they saw, first hand, how this vital territory of life faces growing pressure from our anthropogenic activity and the need to establish rules to protect it.
