KING OF THE ROCK

IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE that I write for The Monegasque™, reflecting on my brother, Michael Jackson, and the enchanting Principality, a country that has long held a special place in my heart and often reminds me of the times I’ve had the privilege to call it home. With 2024 marking the 15th anniversary of my brother Michael’s departure from this world, his memory and legacy continue to resonate deeply within me. As I reminisce about the World Music Awards, particularly the memorable years of 1993 and 1996 when it was held in Monaco, I am vividly reminded of Michael’s extraordinary talent and his profound impact on the music world. These refl ections bring a mix of nostalgia and deep appreciation for his unparalleled contributions to the music industry. The World Music Awards in Monaco were founded under the patronage of Prince Albert in 1989 but they were more than just ceremonies; they were grandiose celebrations of musical artistry, set against the opulent backdrop of Monte Carlo. The Principality, with its unique blend of elegance, history and the arts, has always struck a chord with me. It’s a place where the splendor of the past seamlessly blends with the vibrancy of the present, creating an atmosphere that is both inspiring and comforting. Monaco, with its breathtaking coastline and luxurious ambiance, has been the setting for some of the most unforgettable moments in my life, particularly those involving my family and our shared musical journey.

These prestigious events drew the most illustrious fi gures in music and, as a member of the Jackson family, I had the honor of experiencing the allure and esteem of these awards, especially when Michael was a participant. Michael’s performances at the World Music Awards were not just moments of family pride but also of global admiration. His dynamic presence on stage, a fusion of energy, emotion and musical genius, was captivating. His dedication and love for his craft were evident in every performance, highlighting the World Music Awards as a platform that truly honored artistic excellence. For Michael, receiving the awards for best-selling world artist (presented to him by Princess Stephanie) and American recording artist of the year (he received standing ovations for both) was a testament to his global impact. The creation of a special award by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, designating him as the world’s best-selling artist of the era, was a proud moment for our family and his legion of fans. Today his ability to captivate audiences, his groundbreaking music and his unparalleled stage presence continue to inspire artists and fans around the world. Michael was more than a performer; he was an innovator, a pioneer and a global icon whose infl uence transcends time and genre. As we approach the 15th anniversary of his passing, we remember not just the artist, but the man who forever changed the landscape of music. His enduring legacy continues to resonate, proof of the power of music to connect, inspire and transform.
