Getting Onboard

AS SOMEONE with a busy life and commitments across multiple time zones, I love it when new technology simplifies my life, boosts efficiency, and allows me to put more time into the things that matter.

But let’s be honest, introducing an algorithm or tech hack can sometimes take away from an experience rather than add to it. The rapid proliferation of AI into every corner of our lives is hijacking the definition of “personalized” and feeding it to the masses, resulting in a watered-down version that heavily relies on algorithms and profiling 1s and 0s. It’s cold, impersonal, and taking the shine off the concept of bespoke.

We are a fundamentally social species, so in a world where anyone can access a tech-tailored service, I’d choose interactions over interfaces any day. Which is why I believe yachts—and more importantly the crew onboard—have the edge when it comes to delivering elite-level experiences.

Those who are fortunate enough to have experienced time on a superyacht will understand how magical the crews can make it. They intuitively know exactly what you want even before you do: delivering your favorite drink before you realize you’re thirsty; setting up the watersports just as everyone fancies a dip in the sea; and putting on your favorite playlist just as dinner comes to an end and it’s time to dance the night away. As the world becomes more digitally inclined, these experience experts are coming into their own as orchestrators of priceless memories—and they are evolving into something that is of even greater value.

More and more yacht owners, ironically, many of whom have made their fortunes in tech, are filling the ranks of their own yacht crews with specialists who can really tap into new heights of the onboard experience. Fancy taking up kitesurfing? No problem, we can hire a world champion as a deckhand so they can teach you and your kids. Always fancied exploring the underwater mysteries of the Pacific? Bring in a submersible with a team of marine biologists to guide your journey. Looking to train for an ultramarathon? Chefs will craft menus to hit your exact nutritional goals while PTs ensure you don’t skip a training session on vacation. The sky’s the limit when it comes to your time spent on the water.

And that’s why I believe the human touch will be the defining characteristic of a pinnacle experience in this digitally-personalized era, with yacht crews standing firmly at the summit. Here’s to progress, here’s to embracing the digital evolution, and here’s to valuing the dedicated people who make the greatest positive impact in our lives.
